- I need to clean my desk. It will take me hours. Every time I start, something or someone interrupts me, and I fall 2 steps back.
- I need to drive over to the east coast of Florida to see my mother. This is a command performance for her to give me her sterling flatware, which she has been promising me for a while and has been nagging me to come get personally.
- I was supposed to make arrangements for the family to go to DC for a niece's Bat Mitzvah. I haven't made any flight or hotel arrangments. I wish we didn't have to go.
- I need to get back to a laundry schedule for the boys. Their clothes pile up, and I can't keep up.
- I need to get away with my husband. He does not acknowledge this need, and obstructs matters by rejecting any candidate I propose to stay with the boys.
- I need to sign my kids up for camps. School ends this week, and I haven't done a thing.
- I need to go see my doctors. ENT – I am congested and can't breathe well. Everything smells like cigarette smoke to me. GYN – for an annual check-up, but I hate waiting in her office. Internist – for a general check-up; I fear the worst and rightfully so.
- I need my kids to listen and behave at home once in a while, so I can get some things done around here, like what I've just mentioned, and fix the stuff they've broken.

Struggling
I am struggling to do so many things, and I am accomplishing little.

you sound swamped!
no wonder you need a bit of time and space
and I'm here to tell you that its okay to need things
us women are so poor at acknowledging our needs and asking for them to be met,
but we're usually the first on in the line to meet someone else's needs
if it helps - I hereby give you permission to need!
Do what I did to Spouse last year. I said "we are going away THIS weekend to THIS place and so and so is taking the kids." THEN if he doesn't like so and so, say "we are going away THIS weekend, find someone that you like."
If you pay for airfare for me and both my kids, we'll come down and herd the boys for a weekend. :]
[OR if you're going to DC for the Bat Mitzvah anyway maybe you can take a couple of days on either side of that and find someone up there that WineGuy will approve of]
Look around for a professional organizer in your area. When I've used one, I can accomplish in half a day what would take me weeks on my own. I find if I can get one major space (office, car, kitchen) organized and neat, it reduces stress in other areas.
There's nothing wrong with needing and expressing those needs.
Wish I could come and help you out. I'd be struggling with all of that on my plate, too.
But sometimes it IS all about you! When do you give yourself permission for it to be that way? Probably never. So go ahead and need. We all do.
I need that too. And I have a lazy/needy girlfriend, 2 chihuahuas and a work schedule from 9 am to 6 pm... I would not survive if I were you. And I am just a 30 year old guy. Go ahead, need. No! Go Ahead, escape 1 day for yourself in nature, I am considering that myself. At any cost as selfish as it sounds... Great Blog.
